How Much Traffic Does Your Competition Get? So, you've begun to utilize the internet to let people know about your books, writing, products, services, etc. Great! However, once you've put your stuff out there, it is important to see what your competition is like and how much traffic they are getting. Why? Simple, if you have a blog or a book and you want people to know about it, studying your competition will give you a real good idea about your specific market, the market size, and what it takes to get people to read your blog or book and not your competitions. Traffic refers to how many people are actually visiting a website or blog. Once you begin to understand traffic, you can start to look at how long people stay on a website and what their "click-through" rate is (i.e., do they buy your book or move on). The problem with trying to figure out your competition's traffic is that you do not have access to their log file, so you can't actually see how many people visit the site and buy the book. However, there are several tools one can use to get a pretty good idea. The best free tools that approximately show you how much traffic a website/blog is getting are: www.alexa.com (data numbers are based on people who use the Alexa toolbar not actual web traffic) www.compete.com (data numbers are based on ISP logs, ASPs, toolbars, and opt-in panels - so a wider picture then Alexa) www.smartpagerank.com (gives you the all in one place your Goolge, Yahoo, Altavista, MSN, and AllTheWeb rankings) www.webconfs.com (perhaps some of the best, free tools on the web for examining web traffic and search engine optimization) Use each of these tools with caution. They are not scientific by any means. However, they will give you a picture that you can then set some goals on. If your competition has 1,000 backlinks and you only have 10, you have some work to do (here is a place to start generating backlinks). Is your competition slowly dropping in ranking? Then your job is even easier, because they seem to think that since they dominate the market now they will always dominate. All you have to do is use these and other strategies and soon you will be ahead of them in the rankings. Remember, marketing and promoting ones writing/book/blog/website is a never ending process. You should do a little every day and pretty soon you will see results.
