Wiyot Native Americans

The Wiyot Native Americans – incorrectly referred to as the Wishosk – historically resided along Humboldt Bay, Eel River, and Mad River in northwestern California. Members of the Algonquian language family, the term wiyot has no known meaning. Traditionally the Wiyot indigenous peoples divided themselves into three subgroups. Prior to Euroamerican contact the Wiyot are believed to have numbered around 3,500. Today there are over 450 known Wiyot Native American individuals living in California.

Name: Wiyot. The term wiyot is somewhat of an anomaly as it has no known formal meaning.

Location: Northwestern California in present-day Humboldt county along Humboldt Bay and the Eel and Mad Rivers.

Population: Prior to Euroamerican contact an estimated 1,500 Wiyot Native Americans are thought to have inhabited their homeland. Today there are over 450 known Wiyot.

Language Family: Algonquin.

First Contact by Euroamericans: In 1806 by Captain Jonathan Winship when he encountered Humboldt Bay.

Current Tribal Status: Although the Wiyot Native Americans do not have federal recognition, they continue to maintain their traditional culture and seek to strengthen their identity.
